St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School
Haywards Heath, West Sussex

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School is very fortunate to have extensive school grounds, which include a beautiful woodland space. The woodland gives the teachers a fantastic opportunity to enhance the children’s learning experience in an exciting and engaging way.

Due to shrinking school budgets in recent years, the St Joseph’s woodland area had fallen into disrepair and became unsafe for children and teachers to use. The 70 metre long boardwalk, a decking area in the centre of the woodland, and steps to access the area had all rotten over time and were in desperate need of repair.

JCJ Construction believes in supporting the community and contacted St Joseph’s to offer their help to revive the woodland and bring it back into use.

The old boardwalk was replaced with a brand new, low maintenance, chipped bark pathway and the steps have been renewed to provide safe access into the area. JCJ also constructed a bird hide and a new large decking area in the centre of the woodland, which seats up to 35 children for outdoor lessons.

Friends of School, long-term supporters of the Woods Project, provided the budget for all the materials and JCJ Construction completed all the works free of charge.

“Research has proven that teaching children outdoors encourages curiosity and stimulates all the senses for a child. We are thrilled to be regaining this special learning space within our very own school grounds. The work JCJ Construction have undertaken in our Woodland area has transformed it.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Friends of St Joseph's for raising vital funds to support this initiative and JCJ for sponsoring the work. It has been a huge community initiative to restore the woodland back to an exciting educational resource.

“The use of our school woodland as an extension of the classroom will be an inspirational process, that will offer all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment with trees.”
